Yerba Mate (yer­bah mah­tay) is made from the naturally caffeinated and nutrient­ rich South American rainforest holly tree (llex paraguariensis). It is said to have “the strength of coffee, the benefits of tea, and the euphoria of chocolate” ­ essentially, this tea is a godsend. The leaves of the rainforest holly tree contain an abundance of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and antioxidants, and scientists have stated that the yerba mate leaf contains “practically all of the vitamins necessary to sustain life”.

The caffeine content varies between what you would get from green tea and coffee, but unlike tea, yerba mate has low tannin content (chemical compound in caffeinated teas that can give a bitter flavor) allowing it to be strong like coffee without the bitterness, and unlike coffee, yerba mate is not oily or acidic, making it much easier on your stomach and reducing jitters. With a cup of yerba mate, you’re sure to kick off your day with a clear­headed, sustained energy boost.

However ­ yerba mate is much more than just a delicious, energy­boosting, nutrient­filled tea. In Argentina, southern Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and other South American countries, friends gather to drink mate together almost as a ritual. Tomando mate (drinking mate) is such a celebrated tradition that the Spanish language has its own verb for it:

matear (to drink mate). Yerba mate is traditionally served in a gourd (calabacino, mate, or guaje) with a filtered straw called a bombilla, pictured below:

During a tomando mate ceremony, there is a cebador or cebadora (mate server) who prepares the mate for a group of friends using the steps diagrammed below. The cebador drinks the first couple gourd­fulls to make sure the temperature is right and the bombilla is filtering a smooth mate flow, then the gourd is passed counter­clockwise with the bombilla always facing the recipient. The gourd is refilled and passed around the circle until the yerba mate is lavado (flat), or if someone has had enough and wishes to sit out, they must simply say gracias (thank you) which indicates they are finished tomando mate.

last week i caught the flu - or maybe it was the flu caught me! i needed to sip on something warm and comforting so in my foggy-mind state, i turned to my wall of tea and started to think of what to drink. i saw the jar for tulsi tea... that was it, the choice was obvious. i can vouch that this tea reduced the length of my flu by a few days! typically the flu lasts at least two weeks for me but within a week i was starting to feel more like myself and within a few more days i was completely back to my normal self! love it, love nature!

as my cup of tea was steeping, i began to recall all the wonderful facts about this herb what make it so special – and i wanted to share that with all of you!

have you heard of tulsi?

for over 5000 years, tulsi has been considered india’s “queen of herbs” and is an essential healing herb found in every, medicine man’s or ayurvedic healer’s tool box. tulsi is also commonly known as holy basil.

tulsi plants are grown in many homes in india and also serves as an important symbol in the hindu religion.

tulsi is commonly used to help treat colds, fevers, headaches, stomachaches and other ailments as well as help reduce stress and promote calmness and strengthen immunity. it’s also rich in antioxidants! i’m telling you, there’s nothing this herb can’t help with!

what does it taste like, you’re probably wondering? tulsi has a very sweet refreshing flavor - sort of like a blend of mint, basil, and cinnamon. no need to add any honey, its pretty sweet as it is. excellent as a hot tea or try it served over ice… you’ll definitely be pleased!

Let’s get to the bottom of this Kombucha mystery...

Kombucha is a fermented probiotic drink. It is made from tea, sugar, a SCOBY, and a starter from a previous batch (you will need a starter kit to start brewing Kombucha).

A SCOBY is an acronym for symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast.

after a long hot summer i welcome the fall with open arms. i love this season and who doesn’t? the leaves on the trees are turning yellow, orange, crimson red and i love looking out the window at all of these beautiful colors of autumn.

i love the feeling of warm fuzzy sweaters and scarves while sipping hot tea.

pumpkin spice tea is always a big hit around this time of the year. we don't use syrups to flavor our tea, we use real loose leaf tea flavored with little dried pieces of pumpkin, flower petals, spices and bits of pumpkin shape sprinkles. it just takes a few minutes to make a perfectly delicious latte at home.

all you need is pumpkin spice tea, milk of your choice, water, and sugar if you like it sweet. i used a couple of heaping teaspoons of tea, added boiled water and steeped for 5 minutes (7 minutes for a real strong cuppa latte), add sugar to taste. while the tea is steeping, warm up about 3/4 cup of milk of your choice. filter the tea into your favorite mug, add whisked milk. garnish with grated cinnamon or nutmeg.

if latte is not your cup of tea, drink it up straight. just steep a teaspoon of tea in boiled water for 3-4 minutes and enjoy!

Being a kid, I grew up drinking coca cola & fruit punches to quench my thirst hot summer days... but it never really worked. Drinking sugary drinks only made me thirstier and not to mention more hyper! When I was about 12 I discovered Iced Tea!! It was the healthiest switch I ever made!

My favorite now is the Hawaiian Sunset herbal tea. Its loaded with vitamins and antioxidants and has a delicious, tangy, hibiscus & citrus flavor. Not only does it taste like heaven, its as easy as 1, 2, 3 to make!

Basically, boil the water and add it into a ice tea pitcher, add 4 tbsp. of the tea into the filter. Steep for about 5-6 minutes, longer if you like your tea super strong! Add ice and viola sip 'n enjoy. Guaranteed to quench your thirst!
